Why The Real Housewives Is So Addictive

Why-The-Real-Housewives-Is-So-Addictive_1Have you ever seen any of the Real Housewives shows? Well, I have a confession to make. I am addicted to “ The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” on Bravo channel. I feel extremely embarrassed to be telling you this, because I consider myself an intellectual person, who is not usually fascinated by such drivel. But there is something about the show that makes me feel compelled to watch it. I can actually take comfort to know that I am not the only one out there who loves this stuff. Why do people like myself enjoy watching reality television so much? There are as many reasons as there are people in the audience, but the main ones are sex, indulgence, and celebrity.

Let’s face it; sex sells. Every one is interested in sex, and we love to watch people engage in the behavior that surrounds sex. It is not just the act of sex, but everything that leads up it. Both participants are filled with excitement, passion, and drive. Then there are all of those feelings that happen after sex, like regret and embarrassment. Then there are the resulting actions. This particular season there has been a lot of sex taking place in the bathroom. Jax Taylor had some steamy sex in the bathroom with Laura Lee at Sexy Urban Restaurant; which, by the way is owned by Lisa Vanderpump. She is one of my favorites, but I think the hottest chick on there is Brandi Glanville. Brandi had a tryst with Gerard Butler in the bathroom at a gathering called the White Party, thrown by Kyle Richards. You may remember that Brandi talked about the romp in the media, who then asked Gerard Butler about the incident, to which Gerard questioned, “Who?” It came out later that he did not know her last name, so he didn’t know to whom they were referring. Regardless it was all very embarrassing for Brandi. As viewers we get to see everything that leads up to the sexual act. We get caught up in the excitement, and we have a small stake in whether the act takes place, and how satisfying it turns out to be. We get to watch the train wreck that often ensues as a result, and though we may cringe, we can not look away either. We get to do all of this from the comfort of our own home; and thanks to DVR’s, at our convenience. What is not to love?

Another thing that the audience loves about Housewives is getting to see the over the top indulgence in which these people live their lives. Whether it is the fifty eight million dollar, 48,000 square foot mansion dubbed Crescent Palace, owned by Mohamed Hadid; or the panoramic view and infinity pool of Lisa Vanderpump’s yard, we love to see the luxury. We imagine what it would be like if we had a near infinite amount of money, and a group of great friends with whom to enjoy it. We see a myriad of items, like the bags by Hermes and Louie Vutton, which cost more than some mortgage payments, and fantasize about the ability to buy such an expensive item without even thinking about it. It is an inexpensive way to indulge in their extravagances, at least for an hour at a time.

The general public has always had an interest in the way celebrities live their lives. Just look at how popular TMZ has become. This show gives us a window into the private lives of these rich and famous people. We see that despite all of the money and mansions, people are just people. Some are mean and bitchy, but they are all fun to watch.
